As usual, the VAMPIRES page on Michelle Henry's precious  website  provides  you  numerous  resources...  but    not   the   ones    I'm recommending   now   (I've   just   checked :-) : "Bloody Vampires !"  displays a  brief  webography  which includes  the 5 articles / hilarious video / graph parody that I've been selecting today...  I do hope you'll enjoy them !

Many teachers have had their students study "Twilight", "Dracula", "Interview with a vampire" or other 'vampire stories'... and the students did enjoy the subject ! Here are a few articles on this fad for vampire stories, be they books or films. I think these articles are quite interesting... hope you'll enyoy them as much as I did ;o)

The Most Widely Spoken Languages in the world & the countries they are spoken in

I know the illustration below looks like a map of London tube ... but  actually, it shows the most widely spoken languages in the world and the countries where people speak them :

you'll find out English is the 2nd most widely spoken language (329,000,000 speakers worldwide -it's pictured yellow). Chinese is the first one (825,000,000 speakers worldwide - grey) and Spanish comes third (328,000,000 speakers worldwide - blue)

I guess all teachers are interested in getting effective ways of visualizing, understanding and learning information better.

As for me diagrams, flowcharts, mind maps or any other  visual 'tool' that may help students to improve their language skills might do... provided it is specifically adapted to their needs. These are pictures that illustrate ideas, to get them to plainly visualise what they need to discover, understand and learn  : thus infographics are now smart tools we can select, adapt, create... so as to use them at their best ;o)

Here is a recent talk David McCandless gave at TED Global Oxford about his passion for data visualization and information design : not only did it generate many smiles in a rainy afternoon, but it also confirmed this viewpoint  of mine. 

"McCandless and his cadre of info designers take a spin through the world of visualized data, from hard stats on politics and climate to daffy but no less important trends in pop music. McCandless' genius is not so much in finding jazzy new ways to show data  -the actual graphics aren't the real innovation here-  as in finding fresh ways to combine datasets to let them ping and prod each other." from 'TED Ideas worth spreading'

Besides... most of my students find these 'visuals'

quite aesthetic  -and so do I !

 President Obama speaks to members and guests at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 33rd Annual Award Gala in Washington, D.C.

Go to 21'38" and listen to the President's conclusion : it describes an ideal America.

"[...] So let me close by saying this : long before America was even an idea, this land of plenty was home to many peoples.  To British and French, to Dutch and Spanish, to Mexican, to countless Indian tribes.  We all shared the same land. We didn’t always get along.  But over the centuries, what eventually bound us together - what made us all Americans - was not a matter of blood, it wasn’t a matter of birth. 

It was faith and fidelity to the shared values that we all hold so dear. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, endowed with certain inalienable rights:  life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

      That’s what makes us unique.  That’s what makes us strong.  The ability to recognize our common humanity; to remember that in this country, equality and opportunity are not just words on a piece of paper, they’re not just words in the mouths of politicians - they are promises to be kept.
