 This word is unusual :
every time you remove one of its letters,
  it changes into another one...
... until you get a one-letter word  -which still has a meaning !

Speech at T.E.D.'s
-Technology, Entertainment, Design
(1)

The former vice-president of the U.S.A. (also film-'star' of  "An inconvenient truth") suggests 15 possible ways of reducing climate change... now !
The man who called himself the "former future President of the United States" presents these plans with humour and humanity.

Not only does Al Gore's speech sound quite articulate and easy to catch, but you can also activate English subtitles to understand it even better.  [Nah... you are not going to put the French subtitles on, are you ?! Too easy : it would be no fun ! ]

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan refuses possible failure...
... by world leaders to reach a global agreement on fighting climate change at UN talks in Copenhagen in December.
Last Thursday, Annan was at Descartes University in Paris to promote a song and video aimed at spreading awareness of the damage by global warming and encouraging world leaders to come to an agreement.

The song is an updated version of Midnight Oil's 1987 hit
 "Beds are Burning".
It is called "Tck Tck Tck : Time for Climate Justice" and is designed as a countdown to the December talks.
You can download it  for free  here  ^
You can also sign, as you download : putting a "signature" with each download means signing a sort of  "digital musical petition".

The organizers will count the number of downloads by country : they will use that to lobby governments to make big commitments at Copenhagen.

"Mary & Max" was released in January, 2009 in the U.S.A.
(today, it's being released in France)

Mary Dinkle is a chubby eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne. Max Horovitz is an obese Jewish man 44 years old who lives in New York.
The lonely little girl and the man with Asperger’s Syndrome start writing each other. They get to know each other and become friends.

Mary and Max’s friendship will last more than twenty years... and cross two continents !
It will also survive a great deal of life’s ups and downs.
Though the film is innocent  -but not naive-  it explores various topical issues. . .  I hope you'll enjoy its trailer :o)

New York is often referred to as New York City (NYC)...

800px-Apfel 05    ... or the City of New York,

 <<<

to distinguish it from the state of New York. It is also nicknamed 'Big Apple'. The city is the centre of the New York metropolitan area (one of the most populous areas in the world).

A street (& water !) tour of a few New York City's most famous places and tourist attractions :

New York strongly influences global commerce, finance, media, culture, art, fashion, research, education, and entertainment. It hosts the United Nations Headquarters and is therefore an important centre for international affairs.

Hampton Court Palace was started building in 1514 for Cardinal Wolsey

I told you about this palace on your latest English lesson...
that's why I'd really like you to see what Hampton Court looks like  :o)

In the beginning, Cardinal Wolsey was one of Henry VIII's favourites... but as he couldn't help accomplish the divorce between the King and Catherine of Aragon (his first wife) he fell from grace.
Hoping to regain the King's favour, the Cardinal then presented him his palace...  But this failed too : in the late 1520's, Henry VIII finally kept it !

The above photo shows Anne Boleyn's Gateway and the Great Hall from Base Court.
Henry's had his second wife executed for adultery : today, Anne Boleyn is said to be one of the ghosts in the palace, hence her haunting Hampton Court corridors.

who modernized Hampton Court from 1689 to 1702.

This photo highlights Hampton Court's huge size.
Nowadays it is open to the public and has become a major tourist attraction.

The British royal family hasn't lived in the royal palace since the 18th century. Located south west London, it is 11.7 miles (18.8 km) south west of Charing Cross and upstream of Central London on the River Thames.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
ca. = circa = about / approximately
(to) fall from grace = do something which makes people in authority stop liking you or admiring you

hence = that is the reason/explanation for
                         located = situated
upstream  = en amont d'un cours d'eau (stream = courant)
