The origins of proper nouns
may be surprising...

"Tamiflu" : by now, most of you have already heard this name. It is the medecine aimed at curing the H1N1 flu. We may either have watched/heard it on TV, read it in newspapers or magazines... or heard it on air.
But where does the word "Tamiflu" come from ?

Well... I also guess you have heard of Shakespeare !

"The Taming of the Shrew" -one of his plays- tells  about a man (Petrucchio) whose future bride is  unwilling to have a relationship with him, at first.  Therefore Petrucchio has to  "tame" his future bride.

"Tamiflu" is a pun suggesting this drug is taming
the flu !

on air = on the radio
bride = a woman who is about to get married or has just got married
tame (V) = to control an animal/something  dangerous or powerful
pun = a play on words

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan refuses possible failure...
... by world leaders to reach a global agreement on fighting climate change at UN talks in Copenhagen in December.
Last Thursday, Annan was at Descartes University in Paris to promote a song and video aimed at spreading awareness of the damage by global warming and encouraging world leaders to come to an agreement.

The song is an updated version of Midnight Oil's 1987 hit
 "Beds are Burning".
It is called "Tck Tck Tck : Time for Climate Justice" and is designed as a countdown to the December talks.
You can download it  for free  here  ^
You can also sign, as you download : putting a "signature" with each download means signing a sort of  "digital musical petition".

The organizers will count the number of downloads by country : they will use that to lobby governments to make big commitments at Copenhagen.

you can change its settings : for instance,
you can modify the number of search results per page.

BREATHINGEARTH.NET

As soon as you click on   > > >   BREATHINGEARTH   the simulation starts.

You can visualise people's birth and death rates all over the world..
The simulation also shows the carbon dioxyde emissions
of every country in the world.

You have to remember that this Breathing Earth simulation is only... a simulation.
Though all of the data used for the simulation come from reliable sources,
data measuring on such a massive scale can never be 100% accurate.

Note that the CO2 emission levels shown on the planisphere are likely to be too low
rather than too high....

And if you wish to have more details about it, remember to scroll down the screen
