Edward Hopper is mostly known for his oil paintings... but he also did a great job with watercolours  (like  "The Mansard Roof", 1923, his first  break ) and etching (like his "East Side", 1922 )

thumb_palette_4.pngon Edward Hopper

This clip shows a great deal of his paintings -Benny Goodman's jazz plays  :

I do like the way the artist shows scenes suggesting ordinary lives and places... his painting shadows and light.

An exhibition on Edward Hopper(1) currently takes place in Switzerland (Lausanne) until October 17  :  I'll surely tell you more about the American painter and his artwork ;-)

(1) Thanks indeed to Ms M. Milesi, an onlist colleague, for reminding me of the event !

I have to admit I first watched that Clint Eastwood's movie in French : to me, Dirty Harry's "Vas-y... fais-moi plaisir !" isn't as savoury as the original "Go ahead... make my day !".

... Actually, it's on two EFL French teachers' lists online [e-teach & eTeachNet  -they're worth mentioning !] that I really got familiar with using this phrase.

Born in Kansas (1935), Dennis Hopper started acting in the 50's. He did admire James Dean and adopted the Actor's Studion methods, which made him considered a rebel to  Hollywood's system (Henry Hathaway  fired him off, and he got blacklisted for almost a decade. Most people will remember the iconic movie "Easy Rider" (1969)  -which he directed too. Dennis Hopper also was an art collector, and an artist himself -a painter and a photographer.

In the video below, he defines what success means to him :

Can you identify these women ?

Well... I'm sure you know at least one or two of them  ;-)

To start with, since the Cannes festival is on at the moment... watch the woman on the first video. She used to go to Cannes and is a worldwide known French actress : soooo... who is she ??

The painters who created these ones might be harder for you to find...but then, who knows ?!

Apartheid was officially abolished in 1991. And yet, the differences between the Black South Africans and the Whites still linger... In this film, the American actor Morgan Freeman embodies a Nelson Mandela who bridges the gap between Afrikaners and Black South Africans thanks to the rugby national team !
Here is the official trailer :

The film is worth watching, indeed :o)

(to) linger = take a long time to leave or disappear
(to) bridge  the/a  gap = connect two things (or reduce the difference between them)
