Yesterday was Earth Day, and everybody knows the major area of our planet is covered with water... Well, though mountainlandscapeshappen to bedazzlinglybeautiful, I still prefer landscapes with water :o) (1)
This just reminded me of an old song I'm really fond of. Its title is part of itschorus -welcome to the Home by the Sea !
Beware... not only is the song very long, but you'll discover a "home by the sea" that looks rather mysterious...
Read the song lyrics : all you need is
clicking the manuscriptbelow :
(1)= Hey... what's the use of your "You've got lakes in the mountains, they're water too..." ?? :-D
In September 2007, the Brtish duo Mattafixofficial website<< sang the soundtrack of the film "Living Darfur". At first the song was only downloadable ; it was the first music video clip shot inside a war zone.
The first seconds of the video feature an American actor you probably know... can you recognize him ? I'm helping you : he's one of the lead roles in the latest film by Clint Eastwood 'Invictus', currently on the French screens...
you're thinking "Oh no, not another of those blog articles on Valentine's Day !! O.K., in this case, I'm not bugging you with this -though the non commercial tradition might look nice ;-) Yet, let me just tell you about a song where love isn't evoked the classic way :
"When Midnight Oil released this song (1990), the "world's largest-ever pollution incident, involving the supertanker Exxon Valdez<<<off Alaska'spristinecoasts, had [just] sent shockwaves around the world . Midnight Oil's response, by playing a guerrillagigon aflatbed truckoutside Exxon's headquarters in New York, brought areas of the city to a standstill and was hailed by environmentalists trying to put as much pressure on big business as possible." (from>>>hBBC h2g2-see "Blue Sky Mining").
Thespine-chillingvideo mixes reports from the disaster with the band legendary gig.
pristine =new or almost new, and in very good condition | a gig = (colloquial) rock concert, performance | a flatbed truck = camion à plateaux (ici, pour le concert) | (to) hail = acclaim, greet enthusiastically | spine-chilling = so frightening... that it makes your back (spine) shiver and chill (get cold)
"The last straw... that broke the camel's back" means enough is enough, and you can't bear any more weight. Can you find the French equivalent phrase ?
As I raise my head to broadcast my objection As your latest triumph draws the final straw Who died and lifted you up to perfection? And what silenced me is written into law.
I can't believe where circumstance has thrown me And I turn my head away If I look I'm not sure that I could face you. Not again. not today. not today.
If hatred makes a play on me tomorrow And forgiveness takes a back seat to revenge There's a hurt down deep that has not been corrected. There's a voice in me that says you will not win.
And if I ignore the voice inside, Raise a half glass to my home. But it's there that I am most afraid, And forgetting doesn't hold. it doesn't hold.
Now I don't believe and I never did That two wrongs make a right. If the world were filled with the likes of you Then I'm putting up a fight. I'm putting up a fight. Putting up a fight. make it right. make it right.
Now love cannot be called into question. Forgiveness is the only hope I hold. And love- love will be my strongest weapon. I do believe that I am not alone.
For this fear will not destroy me. And the tears that have been shed It's knowing now where I am weakest And the voice in my head. in my head.
Then I raise my voice up higher And I look you in the eye And I offer love with one condition. With conviction, tell me why. Tell me why. Tell me why. Look me in the eye. Tell me why. _______________
The original version of the song was made available as a free download on the American band's website on March 25, 2003, as the American government had just started invadingIrak.
This song tells the story of Elisa Day and her lover... how romantic :-} Yet, if you listen to its lyrics more attentively, you'll also be told about murder !
The rock song was written by the Australian singer-songwriter Nick Cave (vocals by the Australian pop-singer Kylie Minogue). Nick Cave wrote the song after he heard the traditional song "The Willow Garden", which basically tells the story of a man courting a woman (Rose Connelly) and eventually killing her.
"Where the wild roses grow" was releasedin 1995 and became the band's most triumphant single throughout the world.
Why not listen to it again while reading its lyrics ?
CHORUS They call me 'The Wild Rose' But my name was Elisa Day Why they call me it I do not know For my name was Elisa Day
From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one As she stared in my eyes and smiled For her lips were the colour of the roses They grew down the river, all bloody and wild
When he knocked on my door and entered the room My trembling subsided in his sure embrace He would be my first man, and with a careful hand He wiped the tears that ran down my face
On the second day I brought her a flower She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen I said, 'Do you know where the wild roses grow So sweet and scarlet and free?'
On the second day he came with a single rose Said: 'Will you give me your loss and your sorrow?' I nodded my head, as I layed on the bed He said, 'If I show you the roses will you follow?'
On the third day he took me to the river He showed me the roses and we kissed And the last thing I heard was a muttered word As he stood smiling above me with a rock in his fist
On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief As I kissed her goodbye, I said, 'All beauty must die' And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth
... based upon an English rock band of the 60's : the Beatles
Videogames, advertising and music blend into this smart 2'36" video that advertises the upcoming music videogame : "THE BEATLES - Rock Band"
Today's music lovers are offered a chance to discover the "Fab' Four" ( = the fabulous four members of the Beatles band)-
The four friends from Liverpool -John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr- enjoyed a global celebrity. At that time, the Fab Four literally were the most famous human beings on the planet : whether you liked it or not... the band shook the world :o)
Want to learn some more about the Beatles ? Have a look at this : the Beatles in "the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", a site run by the BBC.
I had a crush on this song the first time I heard it on the radio... Now it has become a hit in France too. Though you might already have heard the tune, I thought it was worth listening to once again :-) Besides, the graphics of this video are a pleasure to view !
Pink sings "Dear Mr President" Live In Wembley, during her 'I'm Not Dead Tour', in April 2007
Dear Mr. President, Come take a walk with me. Let's pretend we're just two people and You're not better than me. I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.
What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street? Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep? What do you feel when you look in the mirror? Are you proud?
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry? How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye? How do you walk with your head held high? Can you even look me in the eye And tell me why?
Dear Mr. President, Were you a lonely boy? Are you a lonely boy? Are you a lonely boy? How can you say No child is left behind? We're not dumb and we're not blind. They're all sitting in your cells While you pave the road to hell.
What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away? And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay? I can only imagine what the first lady has to say You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry? How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye? How do you walk with your head held high? Can you even look me in the eye?
Let me tell you 'bout hard work Minimum wage with a baby on the way Let me tell you 'bout hard work Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away Let me tell you 'bout hard work Building a bed out of a cardboard box Let me tell you 'bout hard work Hard work Hard work You don't know nothing 'bout hard work Hard work Hard work Oh
How do you sleep at night? How do you walk with your head held high? Dear Mr. President, You'd never take a walk with me. Would you?
