Imagine the whole world were a small village of 100 inhabitants...

As students, you often hear about statistics or figures on a large scale -which makes them quite hard to figure out. But if you compare the planet with a small village, and its population with 100 inhabitants, facts get instantly plain and real !

FREE RICE is a word game
You have to find the proper synonym with a word among 4 answers.

  <<<  Click and choose your answers !

For each right answer, "Freerice" donates 10 grains of rice to the

The more you answer (right !), the more rice you can give. The faster you play, the more rice these people can get... 82,992,737,250 (nearly 83 billion !) grains of rice have been earned today. That is enough to feed more than 4.3 million people for one day !  Besides, it's a nice way of practising, and you will improve your vocabulary !

A few facts and figures on hunger :

Should we design the world as a 100-people  village...

- 24 of them would lack electricity ;

- 25 would lack safe water in their homes (or close to them) ;-

- 32 could not breathe clean air ;

- no sanitary facilities for 40 of them.

What about food ?

- 50 of them are hungry some or all of the time because they lack a reliable source of food ;

- 20 are severely malnourished all the time ;

Only 30 inhabitants have enough to eat

in this world village !

In 2010 there are 1.02 billion hungry people (= 15 % of the world population -approximately 6.8 billion). By 2050 food production needs to increase by 70 % to feed the estimated world population of 9 billion people...

and today is WORLD HUNGER DAY.

A picture taken by the N.A.S.A.

Great thanks to R. Thibert (a colleague) for having me discover this amazing picture : wow !
It looks as if Britain were completely covered with snow and ice !
The photo was taken on January 7, 2010,  from 'Terra' satellite.

This pie-chart helps you visualize the US states population

Mikael Häggström (1) drew it according to the 2008 U.S. Census

751px-Pie chart of US population by state

Not only is it useful... but it also looks nice :o)

++ Terminales

You have just started analysing a peculiar US flag today... But what are the states corresponding to the 50 stars on the American flag ?
Click on the notes

and listen to Wakko's little song in "A cartoon to memorize the 50 states"... not that easy, heh ? However, you should recognize many of them ! Write down the ones you remember ; then, listen to the cartoon again until you manage to complete your list.

Click on the map flag : this alphabetical list will help you memorize them more easily.
us_flag_map_T.gifA few mnemonic devices :
- no state begins with B, E, J, Q, S  -nor with X/Y/Z !
- the letters C, M, N and W  correspond to the longest states lists
- C and D include "double" states : North and South... but there is also West Virginia !

Today you met your English assistant.
Have a look at the map :

do you remember where she comes from ?
Which state ? Which city ?
For Monday 19, you know you must draw her portrait. Re-read your notes and remember the information she told you about, in detail.
