Tucson shooting - U.S. gun violence

Today a gunman opened fireoutside at a 'Superway Market'

as Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford was holding a "Congress on Your Corner" event there, in a north-western area of Tucson (Arizona). According to Arizona Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, all the officials had been threatened during "a vitriolic campaign that [had] just occurred" : as for him, the Congresswoman "was the target". The sheriff probably  hinted at the Republican Senator's campaign map, that illustrated each House Democrat with a crosshair(1)  -see the map below.

(1) crosshairs are commonly associated with telescopic sights for aiming firearms : they help the shooter to aim the target precisely.

While she might survive -the sheriff says- ("the surgeon in charge is cautiously optimistic"), thirteen other victims were injured and six died. To see the BBC9 video click on the TV camera below :

The recurring leitmotiv of pro-guns -"Men kill, not guns"- doesn't withhold mere reality : no guns = no shootings... no targets either !

Clicking on the map below gets you to visualise the firearms murders rate (by state, per 100,000 population) :
