Diwali falls on the 15th day of the dark fortnight...
In 2010, it means both Diwali and Bonfire Night fall the same day :
today :o)
Diwali falls in the auspicious Hindu month of Kartik (= October or November in the English calendar). Diwali day 2010 falls on the "amavasya", or the "no moon day". Diwali date comes 20 days after the popular festival of Dussehra (or Vijaya Dashmi). .
On the third day, lots of small clay lamps (called diyas) and candles are lit and placed in houses. Fireworks are also sparked everywhere... hence the name of Diwali : the “Festival of Lights”.
The "pink city" of Jaipur (in Rajasthan) is one of the best places to celebrate Diwali. Each year there's a competition for the best decorated and most brilliantly lit up market. That dazzling display attracts visitors from all over India.
