The tradition originates in many countries. In 1508, Eloy d'Amerval -a French poet- referred to a "poisson d’avril" (April fool, literally "April fish"), which might be referring to the<br />
holiday. But the Roman festival of Hilaria, held on March 25, and the Medieval Festival of Fools, held on December 28 were both precursors of April Fools' Day.<br />
