Which country does the tradition come from ?

The tradition originates in many countries. In 1508, Eloy d'Amerval -a French poet- referred to a "poisson d’avril" (April fool, literally "April fish"), which might be referring to the holiday. But the Roman festival of Hilaria, held on March 25, and the Medieval Festival of Fools, held on December 28 were both precursors of April Fools' Day.
